Telomere Length Test

An analysis that measures the length of the “telomeres,” the end sections of the chromosomes in the cells of the human body. It uses blood or cells from the body for laboratory testing to assess cellular deterioration or biological age.

What are the benefits of a telomere length test?

Telomere Length Testing is one of the medical tools that helps us understand the body's health at the cellular level, particularly in terms of biological age or the degree of cellular deterioration, which may differ from our actual age.

What are the benefits of a telomere length test?

  • Assess health deeply, down to the cellular level
Find out whether the body is deteriorating faster or slower than it should.
  • Plan preventive health care more precisely
If your telomeres are found to be shorter than average, the doctor can recommend health care approaches that are more suitable and better targeted.
  • Adjust your habits to reduce long-term deterioration
Such as choosing the right food, exercising, or getting enough rest, which may help slow the rate of deterioration.
  • Monitor your health continuously
You can be retested after a certain period to see how your telomeres change following adjustments to your health habits.

What is a “telomere,” and how does it affect the body?

Chromosomes are the genetic code (DNA) found within the body's cells. Their role is to control the cells' functions so that they operate correctly. If cells malfunction, it may result from damage to this genetic material. At the ends of the chromosomes are small structures called “telomeres,” which act like “protective caps,” helping shield the chromosomes from damage while cells divide. They gradually become shorter each time a cell divides.

How are telomeres related to physical health?

Although the shortening of telomeres is a normal part of age-related deterioration, a number of studies suggest that telomeres that shorten faster than normal may be associated with the risk of cellular decline, which affects overall quality of life, such as aging, fatigue, or the body's ability to recover. Having telomeres of an appropriate length may therefore reflect good internal balance in the body and be associated with a tendency toward good long-term health.

Factors that cause telomeres to shorten

1. Chronic stress
Stress that accumulates from negative emotions, such as anger, anxiety, or emotional pressure, stimulates the body to release hormones that accelerate cellular deterioration.
2. Insufficient rest
Sleeping less than 7-8 hours per day means the body does not have enough time to repair its cells, and telomeres shorten faster than normal.
3. Fasting or improper dieting
Severe fasting or eating at the wrong times can put the body in a state of stress and accelerate the deterioration of telomeres.
4. Unhealthy eating habits
Consuming too many processed foods, such as those high in trans fats, sugar, or sodium, as well as a lack of fiber from fruits and vegetables, all affect cellular health.
5. Lack of exercise
Or overexertion. Both being completely inactive and exercising excessively can create stress on the body, causing telomeres to deteriorate more quickly.
6. Regular exposure to pollution
Regular exposure to cigarette smoke, PM 2.5 dust, chemicals, or other pollutants increases free radicals in the body, which contribute to the destruction of cells and telomeres.

How can we take care of the health of our telomeres?

Although telomere length is influenced by genetics, many behavioral factors can help maintain and support cells in optimal condition, such as:

  • Eating a balanced diet rich in antioxidants
  • Exercising regularly at an appropriate level
  • Getting enough rest
  • Avoiding smoking and alcohol consumption
  • Managing stress effectively
  • Drinking 2 liters of water a day

What diseases are associated with shortened telomeres?

  • Heart disease: Abnormal functioning of various parts of the heart, such as the heart muscle, heart valves, coronary arteries, or an irregular heartbeat, among others.
  • Diabetes: Chronically elevated blood sugar levels above normal, resulting from abnormally low insulin secretion or the body's resistance to insulin.
  • Parkinson's disease: A movement disorder caused by the deterioration of nerve cells in the brainstem, leading to reduced production of dopamine.
  • Alzheimer's disease: Memory loss commonly found in the elderly, caused by brain atrophy or deterioration, which reduces the functioning of certain parts of the brain.

Note: Shortened telomeres are not a “direct cause” of these diseases, but they are statistically correlated with them and are used as an “indicator” of the cells' capacity to repair and regenerate themselves.

Shortened telomeres are linked to health... so how can we know how short ours are?

Although telomere length cannot be seen with the naked eye, it is now possible to measure telomere length using specialized technology, which helps us understand the level of cellular health in the body and use that information as a guide for preventive health care.

Why should you have your telomere length tested?

  • To use as baseline information for planning long-term health care
  • To monitor the results of behavioral changes, such as exercising or adjusting nutrition
  • To supplement other health assessments, such as muscle mass and the risk of chronic diseases

Getting to know your telomeres is the starting point of caring for your health from within. Although telomeres are only a tiny part of the cell, they play an important role in slowing aging and preventing various diseases. Testing telomere length is therefore like getting to know your true “biological age,” so that you can plan your health care in a well-targeted way.
